Weather Alert: U.S. Embassy Praia

Location: Cabo Verde

Event:   Flooding in Praia; Heavy rains forecasted through September 14

A tropical wave weather system near Cabo Verde is producing large amounts of rain.  The Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia e Geofísica (INMG) issued an alert that the weather system could continue to produce large amounts of rain through Monday, September 14.  Praia is currently experiencing localized flooding in some neighborhoods including Paiol, Lém Cachorro, Calabaceira, and Pensamento.

Avoid low lying areas and be alert for potential flooding, mudslides, and obstructed roadways.  Swells generated by the storm may cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid travel until the storm has dissipated.
  • Monitor the local news for updates.
  • Seek secure shelter.
  • Notify friends and family of your safety
