U.S. Embassy Statement in Support of Cabo Verde’s Independent Judiciary
The ongoing litigation concerning the United States’ request to extradite Alex Saab to face charges of money laundering is a judicial matter to be decided by the independent courts of Cabo Verde. Judicial independence is a cornerstone of democracy. The United States recognizes Cabo Verde’s judiciary as a critical part of its strong democracy and respects the legal process established by the laws and Constitution of Cabo Verde.
In regard to the ongoing request for extradition, the United States will continue to meet all the requirements and guarantees established by the law and the Constitution of Cabo Verde, and any information to the contrary is false. The United States firmly rejects any attempts to improperly influence the judicial process, misinform the public through social media campaigns, or propagate false information in the press.
Cabo Verde’s strong reputation as a country that respects the rule of law and lives up to its international commitments is well founded and well deserved, as this case demonstrates. The Republic of Cabo Verde continues to process this case in accordance with Cabo Verdean law and the country’s commitments as a responsible and steadfast member of the international community.
