Good morning.
The “Empowerment of Women and Girls in Cabo Verde” project brings us together today for another important moment in our partnership, highlighting women’s ability to contribute to inclusive development in Cabo Verde. In addition to the panels that will bring relevant topics to discuss the role of women in small businesses, we will hear from women who – through a competitive process – presented their business ideas. Part of our funding of $150,000 will go towards supporting the innovative ideas we will learn about today. The role of women in the private sector, as promoters of ideas, capable of creating jobs and income, is a capital valued by our countries.
Since the beginning of its implementation in June last year, the project has already done a lot, including studies that help to understand what to do so that women have an effective participation in economic and inclusive development in Cabo Verde.
We are now entering a phase of direct support for business ideas, harnessing the full potential and capabilities of women. I know that one hundred and twenty-three proposals were received from all the inhabited islands of Cabo Verde. And they will all be represented here. This means that on every island there are women who want to play an active role in transforming the potential and opportunities into small businesses.
Today’s event takes place during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which makes us reflect on the project and the results we hope to achieve – the empowerment of entrepreneurs, especially women – by addressing the structural barriers that limit their ability to implement their business. It is another reason for pride for the United States Embassy because, through our partnership, we are promoting greater equality in access to opportunities for women in Cabo Verde.
I conclude by thanking everyone for their presence and their work, hoping that the sessions will be very productive. I have a special word for the women entrepreneurs. Congratulations, success and may you serve as an inspiration to other women!
Thank you.
