Remarks by the U.S. Ambassador Jeff Daigle

(Association for the Defense of the Environment and Development)

Achada Grande Frente High School, April 21, 2023.

Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment,

Representative of the Municipality of Praia, President of the ADAD,

Principal and Students of Achada Grande Frente High School,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning!

It is a great pleasure for me to participate in today’s activities commemorating Earth Day. These activities also celebrate the U.S. Embassy’s partnership with ADAD on implementation of its Plastics Collection and Recycling for Employment Promotion project.

Through the project, ADAD is investing funding of more than eight thousand dollars from the our Embassy’s Self-Help Program into awareness campaigns, trainings, and plastics collection and recycling activities. This initiative not only takes care of the environment but creates employment opportunities and income generation for the community.

One of our Embassy’s goals here in Cabo Verde is to help strengthen resilience to climate change while promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

Adaptation to climate change and measures to protect our environment – and our planet – are increasingly important, for Cabo Verde and for the world.

So, both on behalf of the Embassy of the United States of America and personally, allow me to compliment ADAD, the beneficiaries of the project, and all the partners who are contributing to its success and to the preservation of the environment in Cabo Verde.

Our partnership with ADAD is creating positive results. Together, we are helping to improve quality of life for families by enabling access to economic, environmentally friendly opportunities.

Let me conclude by thanking ADAD for the work done so far, the school, and all the partners for your warm welcome here today.

Thank you all!
