Ambassador Daigle’s Press Statement
YALI -Mandela Washington Fellowship Announcement
May 24, 2023
Good afternoon!
Dear journalists and media professionals.
I have just met with His Excellency, the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva to whom I had the pleasure to introduce the Cape Verdean fellows who will participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship Program, 2023 edition, in the United States of America, namely:
1. Darlene Barreto
2. Michel Cabral
3. Melania Semedo
4. Wagner Gomes
5. Kesia Lima
6. Raul Duarte Soulé
7. Nestor Andrade
These young Cape Verdean leaders are linked to projects that are very interesting for their communities and for Cape Verde. By participating in the Program they will have the opportunity to acquire new skills, new ideas and new networks, opening up new horizons for their future.
They will also have the opportunity to participate in a summit in Washington, DC, and will be part of an exchange program with American institutions.
As you know, the choice of these people was the result of very strong competition
among the candidates who applied for the competition, with young participants from several islands of the country. To date, forty-eight (48) Cape Verdean fellows have participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship Program.
Cape Verde has always invested in the new generation of leaders to promote stronger democratic institutions, greater prosperity, and lasting security for the country, Africa, and the world.
For this year, there are a total of 700 African fellows who will travel to the United States.
Congratulations YALIs and good luck to this year’s 2023 fellows!
